The Ministry of Education yesterday held a training course on ‘Vocational-Oriented Education and the selection of class types in Science, Social Science, or Vocational and Technical Skills’ at Phnom Srok High School in Banteay Meanchey province.

The training course was organised by the Department of Vocational Orientation with support from the General Secretariat of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport (MoEYS).

Kol Pheng Vaddhana, Under Secretary of State at MoEYS, presided over the programme which was attended by over 300 participants, including specialized departments, management, teachers, and students from grades 9 to 12.

Speaking about the purpose of organising this training program, Vaddhana said it is part of an intervention to support secondary school students, providing them with a foundation for self-awareness and information about the job market, which influences the skill needs of Cambodia’s workforce.

“Students must be proactive and take ownership of their decision when choosing a major in higher education, ensuring they get real professional skills that align with the labour market’s needs and match their own abilities and talents,” he said.

He also advised all students on five points including working hard to gain real knowledge, doing self-reflection within the next five years, inculcating good deeds because a good deed will help them succeed in both their academic and professional lives, staying away from drugs and prioritising helping yourself first.

“Build strength by cultivating personal virtues, taking knowledge both in school and society and developing skills – ranging from soft skills to vocational skills – after graduating from grade 12,” Vaddhana emphasised.

“Achieving all of these points will help individuals develop themselves into good citizens and human capital with potential, capable of meeting socio-economic needs.”

It may be recalled that the Ministry of Education conducted the same training course at many high schools in several capitals in provinces including Phnom Penh, Battambang, Kandal, Pailin and Kampong Spue provinces
